Classical definition: Counted from the lord of Lagna, benefics occupy the 4th, 10th and 11th. In modern terms: Find the Lagna lord: the planet that rules that house. Treat the sign where it sits as house 1 and count on from there. There is a benefic in the 4th, a benefic in the 10th and a benefic in the 11th counted from that sign. Benefics are Jupiter, Venus, Mercury and the waxing Moon. Malefics are the Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. Source: Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Chapter 36, verses 35-36 (verse numbers follow the R. Santhanam translation).
