Classical definition: All benefics are in Kendras, while the malefics are in Sahaja, Ari and Labha Bhava. The native, though of humble descent, ascends the throne. In modern terms: Jupiter, Venus and Mercury are all in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house, and so is the Moon when it is waxing. The Sun, Mars and Saturn (the classical malefics) are each in the 3rd, 6th or 11th house. Rahu and Ketu are not counted, because they always sit opposite each other and could never both be in those three houses. The simpler yoga of benefics in Kendras alone is Maalaa Yoga, which is a separate rule on this page. Houses are counted from the rising sign (Lagna): the 1st house is the rising sign itself. Source: Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Chapter 39, verse 48 (verse numbers follow the R. Santhanam translation).
